A bit on personal responsibility

without comments

A glance at the subject title might cause some serious eye-rolling. “Really, a dude who blew up past 1/4 ton is going to lecture on personal responsibility? Is Ted Haggard back in business?”

Well, to answer the first, no. As to the second, I don’t think so, but I’m sure its just a matter of time.

I will, however, point out that most of us aren’t really in a position to lecture on personal responsibility. For some of us, it’s overeating. For others, it’s alcohol, tobacco, drugs or sex. No, not everyone subscribes to an eventually destructive vice. But, a lot of us do.

Which is not to say these vices are unconquerable. I, and others in similar positions, have to believe they are, in order to make the improvements we must in our lives. It’s just difficult.

Which brings me to a paid ad, masquerading as a PSA, I heard on the radio the other day. The ad is the creation and voice of a lady who loves to provide oversimplified solutions to the problems of the day (I’ve never heard her outside of Oklahoma, but there are similar mindsets everywhere).

In the ad, she advocates participation in Oklahoma City’s Million Pound Diet. Which is a worthwhile cause to advocate for the rapidly-improving metropolis. You know, NBA and all of that.

The problem comes when she informs us that the lifestyle changes Oklahoma City needs to make are, to paraphrase, “simple. All you need to do is eat smaller portions and exercise.” As if this was the revelation we’ve been waiting for.

It’s hardly a secret that the key to weight loss is burning more calories than are taken in. The problem is, it’s not easy. If it was, obesity wouldn’t be a national problem.

One of my goals while I’m on this journey will be to avoid dwelling on the mistakes I’ve made to put myself in this position. The mistakes are not unique to me.
