Down five pounds

without comments

Unreal. My biggest loss in a month comes a week after Thanksgiving. I must have done something right. Hopefully, my good, clean living will translate into an OU victory Saturday. :)

Surviving Thanksgiving

without comments

The trick wasn’t so much making it through the day. I’d already decided that I wasn’t going to make myself miserable by forgoing so many of the once-a-year treats Turkey Day offers, so I enjoyed and even indulged some. I did use some of the techniques I’ve learned on the journey, such as waiting 20 minutes before going back for seconds and taking plentiful portions of veggie and salad. Mrs. s2bs also made almost all of the dishes, and found recipes on Weight Watchers that made the sweet potato souffle, the turkey and the stuffing not overly-ridiculous, calorie-wise.

The bigger issue proved to be getting back on the road. I did take in a dinner and a next-day lunch of leftovers, which wasn’t what I was hoping to do. However, we did make one big decision that I think will pay off in the long run. We didn’t take any leftovers home. The banana pudding, pecan pie and pounds of turkey stayed with my mother-in-law, and we came back to a fridge full of the stuff we know we can eat and manage. That, I think, will help keep my day or two of decadence from becoming a surrender of some of the gains I’ve made. I’m hoping to break even at weigh-in this week, and move down the road from there.

A rough week on the road…

without comments

I spent quite a bit of time on the road last week, driving from town to town. It was quite a challenge finding places three or more times a day to eat healthy food. I did discover, however, that the nice truck stops, like Love’s , Travel Centers of America and Flying J do offer a pretty wide selection of fruits, vegetables and other healthy snacks (along with a wide array of complete crap). They’re ubiquitous along interstates, and usually have pretty clean restrooms to boot. Check them out if you have a chance.

Also, Buffalo Wild Wings is another of the growing list of chain restaurants that now provides nutritional information about its selections, although for now, they only give it out by request via e-mail. Thanks to them, at any rate, for providing this information.

I happened across…

with 3 comments

this blog, which is written by Molly Erdman, she of Sonic commercial fame.

She talks about the FullBar, which claims to simulate the effects of gastric bypass surgery. According to FullBar’s folks, you simply eat the bar with a big glass of water, wait 30 minutes, and you won’t be hungry.

Molly answers this with a really good point. This “trick,” for lack of a better word, will work with just about any small, healthy snack and a big glass of water. Try that before you get to go out to dinner, or before a big social gathering. You’ll be less inclined to overeat.

Been a while…

with one comment

…sorry. Things happen, I guess. It’s weird. I’m not doing anything out of the ordinary, but, in the last week, it just seems like the day has gotten away from me. I’ll try to do better about the blog, I promise.

We’ve got a new president, so good luck and God speed, Mr. President-elect. You’ve got some work ahead of you.

As to my journey, it’s been moving right along. After a week of maintaining my weight after a trip to Vermont, I’m down another five pounds, with hopefully even more gone tomorrow. A couple of people stopped me at the gym and mentioned that they’ve noticed the improvement. Since these folks get to see me in all of my glory, or lack thereof, in the locker room, I’ll take that as an pretty good compliment.

115 pounds of clothes…

with one comment

…at least, it seems that way. I got a call from AMVETS earlier this week, asking if I had any donations for their every-six-weeks-or-so trip trough my neighborhood.

“Lady,” I thought, “is this ever your lucky day.”

Clothes from the beginning of my journey

Clothes from the beginning of my journey

Two and a half sacks, plus a suitcase, full of clothes I’ve undergrown.

This, I think is a great day on many levels:
1. AMVETS is a truly worthy cause, an aid organization for veterans.
2. The obvious self-gratification of putting more X’s on the street and on display than a French-Quarter porno store (clothes for us large people are sized by Xs. 4xl, 5xl, etc. I was in the 5-6xl range when this started, now in the 2-4xl range, depending on the type of clothing and the manufacturer).
3. Knowing that there are quite a few needy people out there that can’t easily get large-sized clothing, and that this might help.

I don’t actually know if it was 115 pounds of clothes. But, it was a suitcase that typically weighs 40-45 lbs. when full, plus two sacks that seemed at least that heavy. So, if anything, 115 pounds might be an understatement, though, to be fair, it wasn’t all clothes that we gave away.

But, it’s interesting to think that all those bags I lugged from our back bedroom to our porch (further than it might sound, given the unconventional layout of our house) are a pretty visual and tactile representation of how far I’ve come. So I’ll stick with 115 pounds.

The view from the top of the ramp. It may not be Everest, but it’s beautiful to me.

The (no-longer) fake ID

with one comment

This may get me in trouble with some law enforcement agency somewhere, but I’m too happy to care.

I had to fire out my driver’s license several times in the last week, as I’ve been flying to here and there and, during one of the many times I had to return it to my wallet, I noticed something.

I’m at the weight I listed on my license.

Now, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only heavy dude or dudette that decided to put down the weight I thought I should be, instead of my actual weight. But, now, I’m able to say that everything on my DL is provably correct, not just my need for corrective lenses.

More about the ramp, but first…

without comments

…my apologies for not being as active with this blog in the last two weeks as I should have been. I’ve been scrambling from job interviews, to a small vacation, to some freelance work. I’m also doing some video work for Fan Media Network.

But, anyway, the ramp. For the last couple of years, my wife and I have taken an elevator to our seats in the upper deck of Owen Field, because of some recent back problems and surgeries she’s had (she’s much better now, and this is probably our last season of needing the elevator). Before that, climbing the ramps to our seats proved an ordeal that required 2-3 breaks en route (though, to be perfectly fair, plenty of people huff and puff up those things. those that know will back me on this). Last week against Kansas, though, she and I were getting to the stadium at different times. So, I decided to give it a shot.

Made it up without breaks, and a bare minimum of huffing. Pretty happy, if I do say so my damn self.

The ramp at Owen Field. East side upper deck. I climbed it. First time in a long time. More later.
